What it is
The Employees' Provident Fund is retirement savings that you and your employer pay into every month from your salary.
How it's worked out
You pay 12% of basic + DA. Your employer also pays 12%, but part of it (8.33% of pay up to ₹15,000) goes to the pension scheme (EPS). Interest is worked out monthly and added once a year; pay rises each year by the % you set.
What each input means
- Monthly Basic + DA: Your monthly basic salary plus dearness allowance (DA) — on your payslip.
- Current EPF Balance: Your EPF balance today. Optional.
- EPF Interest Rate (p.a.): The yearly interest % — use today's rate from the bank or post office.
- Annual Salary Increment: By how much % you expect your salary to go up each year.
- Current Age: Your age today, in years.
- Retirement Age: The age you will retire at.
Good to know
The rate is set each year. Interest on your own contribution above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxable. Withdrawing before 5 years of service can be taxed.
A quick example
Basic + DA of ₹25,000 at 30, rising 5% a year, 8.25% interest: the fund passes ₹1 crore by 58.
