What it is
The National Pension System is a market-linked retirement account. At retirement, part of the money comes to you as a lump sum and the rest buys a monthly pension (an annuity).
How it's worked out
Monthly contributions (raised each year by the step-up) grow at the expected return until retirement. The annuity share buys a pension paying the annuity rate a year; the rest is the lump sum.
What each input means
- Current NPS Value: What your NPS is worth today. Optional.
- Monthly Contribution: How much you put in every month.
- Annual Step-up: By how much % you will raise your monthly amount each year.
- Expected Return Rate (p.a.): The yearly growth % you expect. Markets go up and down, so this is a guess.
- Current Age: Your age today, in years.
- Retirement Age: The age you will retire at.
- Annuity Purchase (%): The share of the money that must buy a monthly pension at 60 (at least 40%).
- Expected Annuity Rate (p.a.): The yearly % the pension plan pays — ask the insurer for today's rate.
Good to know
At least 40% must go to the annuity. The 60% lump sum is tax-free; the pension is taxed as income. Returns depend on the funds you pick.
A quick example
₹10,000 a month from 30 to 60 at 10%: about ₹2.3 crore, giving about ₹1.4 crore in hand and a pension near ₹45,000 a month at 6%.
