What it is
A bond is a loan you give to a government or company. It pays interest (the coupon) on its face value and returns the face value at the end.
How it's worked out
Yearly income = units × face value × coupon. Current yield = coupon income ÷ price paid. Yield to maturity also counts any gain or loss from buying above or below face value, spread over the years left.
What each input means
- Number of Bonds: How many bonds.
- Face Value: The amount you get back for one bond at the end.
- Purchase Price: The price you pay for one bond.
- Coupon Rate (p.a.): The interest % the bond pays each year on its face value.
- Coupon Frequency: How many times a year interest is paid (0 = all at the end).
- Years to Maturity: How many years until the bond ends.
Good to know
The yield to maturity here is an approximation. Coupon income is taxed at your slab; Sovereign Gold Bond gains are tax-free if held to maturity.
A quick example
10 bonds of ₹1,000 at 8%, paid twice a year: ₹400 each time, ₹800 a year.
