What it is
A fixed deposit locks a sum with a bank for a set time at a fixed interest rate, and pays it back with interest at the end.
How it's worked out
Interest compounds every quarter, the usual bank practice: maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ 4)^(4 × years).
What each input means
- Principal Amount: The amount you deposit.
- Interest Rate (p.a.): The yearly interest % — use today's rate from the bank or post office.
- Tenure: How many months the deposit runs.
Good to know
Interest is taxed every year at your slab, and the bank may deduct TDS. Breaking it early usually costs a penalty on the rate. Deposits up to ₹5 lakh per bank are insured.
A quick example
₹1 lakh at 7% for 12 months: about ₹1,07,186 at maturity.
