What it is
FIRE means financial independence, retire early: having enough invested that its yearly withdrawal pays for your life. Working after that is a choice.
How it's worked out
Expenses are grown by inflation to the age you want to stop. FIRE number = yearly expenses then ÷ safe withdrawal rate. Your savings today grow at the expected return; the monthly SIP needed fills the rest. Coast-FIRE is what you would need invested today to get there with no more saving.
What each input means
- Current Age: Your age today, in years.
- FIRE Age: The age by which you want work to be optional.
- Monthly Expenses: What your household spends in a month today, without one-off big costs.
- Current Savings / Investments: What you have invested today towards this goal.
- Expected Return: The yearly growth % you expect. Markets go up and down, so this is a guess.
- Inflation Rate: By how much % prices rise each year.
- Safe Withdrawal Rate: The % of the corpus you take out each year once you stop working. 4% is a common rule; lower is safer.
Good to know
A 4% withdrawal rate is a common rule of thumb; a lower rate is safer for a long retirement. Medical costs and big one-off spends need their own buffer.
A quick example
Spending ₹50,000 a month and stopping in 23 years with 6% inflation: expenses become about ₹1.9 lakh a month, so at 4% you need about ₹5.7 crore — about ₹1.5 crore in today's money.
