What it is

A SIP (systematic investment plan) puts a fixed amount into a mutual fund every month. Each instalment buys units at that month's price, and what you have keeps earning on itself.

How it's worked out

Each month's amount grows at the expected return divided by 12, for the months left. Nominal Future Value = P × [(1 + i)ⁿ − 1] ÷ i × (1 + i), where P is the monthly amount, i the monthly return and n the number of months. A step-up raises P every year.

What each input means

Good to know

Real returns go up and down; this assumes the same return every month. Turn on inflation to see what the money will buy in today's terms. Equity gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year are taxed at 12.5% when you sell after a year.

A quick example

₹10,000 a month for 10 years at 12%: you put in ₹12 lakh and end with about ₹23.2 lakh.
