What it is

An SWP (systematic withdrawal plan) pays you a fixed amount every month from an invested sum, while the rest stays invested. It is a common way to draw income after retirement.

How it's worked out

Each month the balance grows by the return ÷ 12, then the withdrawal comes out. With the inflation raise on, the withdrawal goes up by that % every year. If the balance cannot cover a month, that is when the money runs out.

What each input means

Good to know

Taking out more than the money earns eats into the principal. A yearly rate of about 4–5% of the starting sum is often seen as sustainable. Each withdrawal is partly a sale of units, so gains in it can be taxed.

A quick example

₹50 lakh earning 8%, taking ₹30,000 a month: it lasts the full 20 years and still grows, because the payout is below what the money earns.
