What it is

The same monthly amount, put into a deposit with a fixed rate or into an equity SIP. This shows what each leaves you with after tax.

How it's worked out

Both grow monthly: the deposit at its interest rate, the SIP at the expected return. Deposit interest is taxed at your slab plus 4% cess. SIP gains are taxed as equity long-term gains: 12.5% plus cess on gains above ₹1.25 lakh.

What each input means

Good to know

The deposit's value is certain; the SIP's is an estimate that can be lower in a bad stretch. In reality deposit interest is taxed every year, which lowers it a little more than shown.

A quick example

₹10,000 a month for 10 years, 7% deposit against a 12% SIP, 20% slab: the SIP leaves roughly ₹5–6 lakh more after tax.
